Where I live, it’s colder. Quite a lot colder sometimes. We have a warning for snow and ice today. You don’t get those where my cousins live!
I haven’t been here very long. I was sent to a charity shop to raise funds for a good cause. They told me to look out for a human who looked as if they needed an orangutan to look out for them and be a good influence on them. When I asked how I would recognise one, I was told, “You’ll know!”
And I did. A female came into the shop for a look around, and something told me that she needed an orangutan. The irony is, she wasn’t actually looking for an orangutan at all — she was looking at a sloth! She’d just bought one in another charity shop the day before, and when she saw his twin sitting right next to me she decided it was only right to buy him, too.
Fine. I have nothing against sloths. They’re cute and cuddly, and they’re… not exactly hyper-active. They don’t bother anyone. But this one looked as if he was about to help himself to my chosen human, and I wasn’t having that!
So, I shuffled along the shelf a little, and stared at her. Hard. Eventually she noticed me, and smiled.
“Do you want to come, too?”
Humans aren’t completely unintelligent, but they do ask silly questions!
She didn’t wait for an answer, but picked me up and headed for the counter. With both of us.
The lady at the counter smiled.
“Aww, isn’t he cute?”
Looking at the sloth.
Well, to be fair, he’s massive, and I’m not. But there was nothing fair about being stuffed head-first into the one remaining corner of the bag he almost filled!
My new human took me out and put me the right way up.
“They both are!”
Oh, good. I was beginning to wonder if I’d picked the right one!
I realised that I had when she brought us through the park on our way home, and introduced us to the ducks and geese and swans who live there. Gulls and pigeons, too! I hadn’t seen anything like that before, and I was thrilled with them. Far as I could tell, the sloth was, too (he smiles a lot, but doesn’t say much).
She took some pictures, so I posed for her. She was surprised.
“Oh, that’s clever! I like that. Could you just turn to the side a bit, please? That’s right. Now, how about bending your knees and clasping your hands around them? Perfect!”
Well, that’s interesting! I’ve been taught the way to a human’s heart’s through giving them a lot of cuddles. Seems the way to this one’s heart is through a camera lens!
OK. I can do that.
I posed on a park bench. I posed beside the lake. I posed with a bewildered swan. I draped myself around a tree branch. And when we got home, I showed her how well I can dangle from a towel rail. She was entranced.
“What a terrific model you are!”
Good. I’m so glad you appreciate my efforts. Now, can we please have some dinner, and then make a start on getting you more organised? I can already see how much you need it!
If It looks as if I’m going to have a busy time…
